Frequently Asked Questions
Fitness Reloaded’s Diabetes Prevention Program is a health coaching program that is part of the National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDPP). It is an evidence-based lifestyle change program for preventing type 2 diabetes. The program is based on research by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) which demonstrated that at-risk adults reduced their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 58% overall, and 71% in adults over age 60. This was more effective than medication alone.
Over the course of 12 months, participants attend 26 60-minute virtual sessions (19 sessions in the first six months and 6 sessions in the second six months) and, in a small group of 8-25 people, learn strategies for healthy eating, increasing physical activity and managing stress to reduce body weight and lower diabetes risk. The group is led by a Lifestyle Coach trained on a CDC-approved curriculum and together participants work toward common goals.
You’ll be able to complete the program during the work day, using personal time – on work breaks (including meal breaks) before or after work, and at your leisure (vacation or floating holidays).
You’re qualified for the program if:
- You have been diagnosed with prediabetes
- You score as high or increased risk in the 1-min Quiz
- You had gestational diabetes when pregnant
During the year-long program, you will attend 26 60-minute sessions over 12 months, and meet in a small group supported by a certified Diabetes PreventionLifestyle Coach. The Lifestyle Coach will help you reach your goals.
For the first two months we’ll be meeting weekly, then biweekly until month 6, and starting month 6 we’ll meet monthly all the way till month 12.
Achieving the following two goals will slash your risk of developing type 2 diabetes:
- Lose 5 to 7% of weight (that is 14 lbs for a 200 lbs woman)
- Reach 150 min of physical activity a week (walking, yard work, everything counts!)
You’ll also learn coping skills about weight management, healthier eating habits, increasing physical activity, reducing stress, and improving sleep.
If this is covered by your employer then the program is free for you. If it’s self-pay, then the is $59/month for 12 months. This is not a drop-in program – you’re supposed to complete all 12 months.
While most people start eating more plant-based foods while in the program, we don’t specifically advocate for excluding any food groups as part of our program, however you can choose to be vegetarian or vegan if this is how you wish to eat.
